It is alleged that a lost book of Nostradomous has been found and is being studied by scholars.
I am not sure if the scholars are claiming that in the year 2012 we would have the battle of Armageddon, or the battle of Gog or Magog, or the total END of life on earth.
Neither of these three events will occur in 2012.
From the end of the tribulation period the world will continue on through the Seven Last Plagues and the Millennium (a thousand years), to finally be destroyed AFTER the battle of Gog and Magog.
If I would venture a speculation/guess of what COULD happen in 2012 (if the event has not occurred prior to that year) would be the Sixth SEAL appearance of the Lord with power and majesty (Re.6:12-17).
However, the Scriptures do declare we do not know the day or hour.
Re.6:12 And I beheld when he had opened the SIXTH SEAL, and, lo, there was a GREAT
Re.6:13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth (Matt.24:29), even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
Re.6:14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and EVERY MOUNTAIN (Ps.104:6) AND ISLAND WERE
Re.6:15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains (Isa.2:19, Isa.13:7-8);
Re.6:16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of HIM THAT SITTETH ON THE THRONE (Lk.21:27, Isa.2:19), and from THE WRATH OF THE LAMB (Re.6:17 below):
Re.6:17 For the GREAT DAY OF HIS WRATH IS COME (Re.6:16 above, Joel 2:31, Jer.30:7); and who shall be able to stand (Lk.21:36)?
